My primary objective as a teacher is to create classroom spaces where students feel empowered to “speak back” to disciplinary norms and to augment, revise, and unsettle conventions, as their intellectual acumens strengthen. At least one of the courses that I annually teach includes a required service-learning component. I also use course assignments to support students in putting the theories and concepts that we cover in class into practice. In a number of my classes, culminating assignments enable students to choose a presentation format of their design to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the semester.
